Join us on April 26, 2023 at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET for the launch of the US Edition of the Pesticide Atlas, a powerful compendium on the state of pesticides around the world and in the United States—and why it matters. This conversation will bring together the authors of the US chapters of the global Pesticide Atlas for a compelling and timely virtual conversation about pesticides and the alarmingly persistent use of them in the United States and what we can do about it.

Moderated by the national bestselling author and sustainable food advocate, Anna Lappé, this lively discussion will bring together leaders at some of the most important civil society organizations working for common sense pesticide action, including Pesticide Action Network (PAN) North America, the Center for Biological Diversity, US Right to Know, and Hawaii Alliance for Progressive Action. Attendees will come away with a better understanding of the connections between pesticide use and public health, the climate crisis, and biodiversity as well as a deeper understanding of the policy barriers and opportunities for action on pesticides here in the United States.

The world has never used as many pesticides as it does today, and the United States uses more than any other country. The world has also never had more evidence of the impacts of pesticide use. Join us to discuss the implications of the Pesticide Atlas and to harness the power of people coming together to debate, deliberate, and act for a world safe for us all.

Food. It is one of the most fundamental aspect of our lives, connects deeply to our cultures, and impacts everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink to the climate we depend on. In the context of worsening climate shocks and an ongoing epidemic of needless hunger and diet-related illnesses, we dive deep into conversation with two Bay Area food system changemakers talking about a vision of food that includes us all: that provides good, healthy, accessible food for everyone one of us.

We will be in conversation with Navina Khanna, executive director of the HEAL (Health, Environment, Agriculture and Labor) Food Alliance, and national bestselling author Anna Lappé of Real Food Media and the Panta Rhea Foundation. Together, they will share their own food journeys as share stories of how our food system connects to the biggest issues of our time—from the climate crisis to racial justice—and what we can each do about it. Please join us for what will be a fascinating and inspiring conversation!

This program has 2 types of tickets available: In-person and online-only. Please pre-register to receive a link to the live-stream event.

“BBQ  without Borders is a space to celebrate and honor our most vulnerable communities. We hope you can come eat something delicious, witness a spectacular performance, meet someone new, and walk away with a new experience.” —Dr. Vibha Gupta.

BBQ without Borders 2023, at the Oakland Museum of California,  is a place to celebrate immigration through the lens of regional Barbecue. Featuring Chef Lilly Duran of Clandestina Cocina, Chef Ron Dumra of Wah Jee Wah and Chef Tadayuki of the former Family Cafe; we will be serving delicious Cuban, Japanese and Indian BBQ (both vegetarian and non vegetarian options) along with specialty desserts, signature cocktails, beer, wine and sake. Live entertainment will take place throughout the night- we will have Taiko drummers, a Cuban Salsa band, Bhangra, Flamenco and even a little opera! We will also have an immersive exhibit exploring the lives and stories of our featured Chefs, a kids activities center, a raffle of amazing prizes and an interactive art exhibit.

Proceeds will benefit the newly-established Resilience Fund, designed to distribute micro grants to vulnerable Bay Area residents: recent arrivals, and those with varying levels of documentation and DACA status.

We’re thrilled to be a co-sponsor of this event!

Art/Act: Local is the annual summer exhibition at the David Brower Center. This juried show features local emerging artists’ takes on various environmental themes and issues. As a home for the environmental movement, the David Brower Center aims to feature the rich, diverse perspectives of all people from all zip codes — especially those most impacted by environmental injustices.

The exhibit this summer seeks to answer: How can food provide not only sustenance but also intimate, intricate portals back to the land and environment? How can food be not just something we simply individually consume, but also an expression of care as a community
How is food part of our systemic interrogations that ask “what’s on the table” and “who’s at the table?” How do we cultivate not just what feeds us through extraction, but what nourishes us in restorative relationships with the land and each other?

Tiffani is thrilled to be a member of the jury for this summer’s session. Make sure you check out the exhibit this summer in Berkeley!

IFIP’s 2023 Global Conference builds on discussions and conversations from our 2021 Funders Retreat with an aim to facilitate this transformation through a curated space for funders and Indigenous partners to co-create next action steps including expanding the sphere of Indigenous Philanthropy and direct access to funding. The conference aims to achieve this by building on IFIP’s yearly programming, which addresses funding strategies and continued peer learning. This will include reflecting on donor practices and strategies that need to change to better align with Indigenous values and the 4Rs (Respect, Reciprocity, Responsibility, and Relationship) of Indigenous philanthropy.  In promoting the 4Rs of Indigenous Philanthropy, IFIP works towards decolonizing philanthropy and prioritizes Indigenous representation in spaces of decision-making and influence as well as Indigenous self-determination, and inter-generational & inter-sectional leadership at all levels.

Every species of sea vegetable, shellfish, and fish has its own story, culture, and set of policy issues. Each species, their environments, and the cultures that depend on them are at risk due to pollution, corporate extractivism, and the climate crisis. At the frontlines of those struggles are the Indigenous people who have carefully stewarded the waters around them and are continuing to do so today. Carl Wasillie, Yupik biologist based out of Washington and Alaska, and Peleke Flores, a Hawaiian fishpond restoration expert, will share the histories and strategies of living in harmony with an often overlooked part of our food system: the waterways.

This session will be followed by an interactive Q&A in Zoom.

Healing Grounds: Climate, Justice, and the Deep Roots of Regenerative Farming, Liz Carlisle’s newest book, is more than a book about farming – it is a reckoning of the rotten roots of a food system built on genocide and slavery. Despite this history and all of the ills that come from it, the promises of regenerative farming have sparked hope for many – from farmers to government officials. In recent years, popular press and documentary-films have suggested that regenerative agriculture is a new innovation and movement led primarily by White people, but that simply isn’t true. As Liz writes:

The more I learned, the more I came to see that regenerative agriculture was neither a relic nor a fantasy. It had always been here, but on the margins. Pushed to the edges of industrial agriculture, these practices had been sustained by people pushed to the edges of society. This was not just a story about regeneration, but also one about liberation—and these two were powerfully intertwined.

Liz Carlisle and agroecologist Aidee Guzman will take us on a deep dive into the world of soil, share why and how to cultivate diversity above and below the ground, and illuminate pathways to regeneration and liberation.

This session will be followed by an interactive Q&A in Zoom.
